Family Strengthening: Reaching for the STARS

Prerequisites:

There are no prerequisites for this class. If you are court ordered to enroll, you must enroll yourself and have a letter of referral from the agency that wanted you to come to bring to class. If you do not have an agency that has referred you, just come as you are.

Goals:

  1. Building children with a high self-esteem, self-determination, and social competence.
  2. Building parents with a high self-esteem, self-determination, and social competence.
  3. Having an ongoing parent information and resource dialog and connection via Internet.

Synopsis of the program:

This program is a training for “parents” with children between 3 and 18 years of age. The program aims to prevent violence against the self, violence in the family and violence against the community. The program stresses positive communication and discipline strategies to enhance a child’s self-esteem, self-discipline and social competence. The program includes anger management techniques and developmental information. A variety of teaching practices will be utilized: modeling, role-play, lecture and discussion.

The program is structured into 5 components. In each component parents will:

  1. Cultural/Spiritual-History/Values Based
    Develop an understanding of how family history and culture influence values and behaviors
  2. Rites of Passage
    Implement home activities, which transition a child from childhood to adulthood.
  3. Parent-Child Relationships
    Use positive communication techniques and set developmentally appropriate expectations.
  4. Positive Discipline
    Demonstrate a variety of techniques to increase respectful behavior and decrease disrespectful behavior.
  5. Community Involvement
    Access and utilize community resources to promote violence-free lifestyles.

Outline of the Program:

  1. Attend all 8 sessions on-time and leave on-time
  2. Complete a pre and posttest
  3. Complete outside assignments which include the follow but not limited too:
    1. Weekly journals with your child (7)
    2. Complete five computer assisted learning modules with post scores of 90% or higher.
    3. Tape with my own child or loaner child: strategies introduced in the course - and obtain instructor critique for each PRAISE, IGNORE, TEACH, TIMEOUT, SOLVE, TRY, and SAFETY
    4. Design a volcano with your child or a loaner child to develop a crisis diversion and anger control plan for self and target child.
    5. Demonstrate ability to change behavior of child/significant other through attention profile demonstrated in class.
    6. Participate in weekly tests over material taught.
    7. Participate in technology training sufficient to complete above-included but not limited to scanning documents, using email to communicate, searching internet for child/ adolescent parenting resources.
  4. Maintain confidentiality
  5. Post information to an online portfolio that we, together, set up.
  6. Provide a written recommendation, if instructed to participate, from referral agency.
